The short answer
IOE case status is the status of a USCIS case whose receipt number starts with IOE, the prefix USCIS uses for electronic (online) filing. IOE is not a service center. You track the case by entering the full 13-character IOE number on Case Status Online or by signing in to your USCIS online account.
At a glance
| What IOE means | Electronic (online) filing; USCIS also ties it to the Immigrant Fee |
| Is IOE an office? | No. The case is assigned to a working office after intake |
| How to track it | Case Status Online or your USCIS online account |
| Where the office shows | Your newest notice and your account case history |
| Do you get an Online Account Number? | Yes, only people with an IOE receipt have one |
What Does IOE Mean in a USCIS Receipt Number?
IOE marks a case that entered USCIS through electronic filing. A 2021 USCIS Office of Legislative Affairs guide lists IOE as "Electronic (online) filing / USCIS Immigrant Fee." Unlike EAC or LIN, the three letters describe a channel, not a building, so the prefix alone never names your office.

The official wording
USCIS's own wording for IOE in that guide is "electronic filing/immigrant visa fee." So an IOE receipt number points to two sources: a form you filed in your online account, or the USCIS Immigrant Fee paid online after an immigrant visa.
Does IOE Stand for a Computer System Name?
Some blogs say IOE stands for a particular computer system name. USCIS has not published an expansion of the letters on any page we checked, so treat those claims as unofficial. The practical IOE receipt number meaning is simple: the case arrived electronically.
How Does an IOE Case Status Check Work?
An IOE case status check works the same way as any receipt lookup, with one bonus. You enter the 13-character code on Case Status Online for a quick public result, and because the case was filed online, your account usually shows fuller history, every notice and any messages.
What you need before you start
- The full IOE number from your notice or account.
- Your USCIS online account login, if you filed online.
- The form number, so you can match each code to its case.
- The date of the last notice you received.
What the public result shows
Case Status Online returns a short update title, a date and a sentence of detail. For an IOE case, the account view is the fuller record, and the public tool is a fast second check from any device.
How to Check IOE Case Status Step by Step
To check IOE case status, copy your IOE receipt number, type it with no dashes on Case Status Online, then sign in to your USCIS online account to read the full history.
Doing both takes a minute and gives you the public result plus the full case history, as the two lists below show.

On Case Status Online
- Go to Case Status Online: egov.uscis.gov.
- Type the letters IOE followed by the ten digits.
- Leave out spaces and dashes.
- Submit and read the update title and date.
- Note the date so you can spot the next change.
In your USCIS online account
Sign in with the same login you used to file. Open the case card to see the history, documents and messages. Free USCIS online account: case status updates, notices, link paper-filed cases. Our guide to the uscis online account number explains the account identifier shown in your profile.
Which Service Center Handles IOE Cases?
No single service center handles every IOE case. After electronic intake, USCIS assigns each case to a working office based on the form and workload. That can be any of the service centers, the National Benefits Center or another office. Your notices, not the prefix, tell you which one.

Electronic intake, human assignment
Filing online removes mail and data entry, but an officer still decides the case. The IOE processing center people ask about is really a sorting step. Once the case is routed, it sits in an office's queue like any paper case of the same form type.
Offices that may hold an IOE case
Depending on the form, an IOE case can land with the Vermont, California, Nebraska, Texas or Potomac Service Center, or the National Benefits Center.
The office line on your newest notice tells you which.
Field offices for interviews
Some cases later go to a local field office for interview, which brings a new office into the picture. Our guide to uscis service centers explains what each one does.
What Is My Service Center if My Receipt Starts With IOE?
To answer "what is my service center" for a USCIS IOE case, read the office named on your newest notice, then check your account history for any transfer. If no office is shown yet, the case may still be in early routing.
Read the office line on the notice
Receipt notices for online filings often name the handling office in the lower part of the letter. If you see a center name there, that is your IOE receipt number service center for now.
Check the history for transfers
A later Case Was Transferred update means a new office has the file. The newest office wins. Our explanation of the case was transferred update covers what a move means for timing and notices.
Is IOE a Service Center or a Filing Channel?
IOE is a filing channel, not a service center. The letters describe how the case reached USCIS: electronically. Searches for the IOE service center or IOE USCIS center reflect a fair assumption, since older prefixes do name centers, but there is no building or office called IOE.
Channel versus office
The table compares the IOE prefix with a center prefix on four questions people ask about their receipt number.
| Question | IOE prefix | Center prefix (e.g. EAC) |
|---|---|---|
| Names a physical office? | No | Yes, the one that first received it |
| Tells you how it was filed? | Yes, electronically | Usually paper intake |
| Changes after a transfer? | No | No |
| Where to find the working office | Newest notice or account | Newest notice |
Why forums say "IOE service center"
People see EAC mapped to Vermont and assume IOE maps to somewhere too. Our hub page on the USCIS receipt number format and prefixes shows all nine confirmed prefixes side by side.
Why Is No Office Listed for My IOE Case?
An IOE case may show no office because it is still being routed, because the notice type does not print one, or because the public tool simply does not display office names. The office usually appears on a later notice or after a transfer.
Normal reasons for a blank office
- The case is new and has not been assigned yet.
- The notice is a simple receipt that does not show a center.
- Case Status Online rarely names offices in its short updates.
- The case is in a shared queue across several centers.
When to ask USCIS
If the processing times tool asks for an office and you have none, and your case seems overdue, contact USCIS. An agent can often confirm the assigned office.
Have your IOE number ready.
Annotated Sample: Where Your IOE Number Appears
On an online-filed receipt notice, the IOE receipt number sits in the labelled box at the top left, beside the received date and case type. The account dashboard repeats it on each case card.
Copy it from either place, letter by letter, before you check status.

Case identifiers on the notice
- Receipt Number: the 13-character code, starting IOE.
- Received Date: the date USCIS logged the filing.
- Case Type: the form you filed, such as I-130.
Check all three against what you filed.
Notice date and office line
- Notice Date: when the letter was generated.
- Office line: the working office, when one is printed.
The notice date can differ from the received date by a few days. Use the office line, when present, for processing-time checks.
Fields on the account dashboard
Each case card in the account shows the form number, the IOE code, the latest update and a link to documents. To learn every box on the printed notice itself, read our guide on what is an i 797c.
IOE Receipt Number vs the Numbers People Confuse
Online filers often hold four similar numbers, including the Online Account Number and the A-Number, compared in the table below. Only the IOE code works in Case Status Online.
The others serve different jobs, so a failed lookup often means the wrong number was typed.

Comparison of the four numbers
Each row shows one number, how to recognize it, what it identifies and where you are asked for it.
| Number | Format clue | What it identifies | Asked for on |
|---|---|---|---|
| IOE receipt number | Starts with IOE, 13 characters | One online filing | Status checks, inquiries |
| Online Account Number | Shown in your account profile | Your online account | Some paper forms |
| A-Number | 7 to 9 digits, often with "A" | You, across all files | Most immigration forms |
| Green card number | 13 characters on the card | One physical card | Identity and work checks |
A quick test
If it starts with IOE and came from a notice, it is a receipt number. If it sits in your profile, it is the account number. Our guides to the alien number and the green card number explain the other two.
How Is the IOE Number Different From the Online Account Number?
The IOE number tracks a case; the Online Account Number (OAN) identifies your account. USCIS ties the two together: USCIS Online Account Number (OAN): only if you have an IOE receipt; shown in your account profile or at the top of the Account Access Notice. So having an IOE receipt is what gives you an OAN.
Why paper forms ask for the OAN
Some paper forms have a box for the OAN, so USCIS can link the new paper filing to your existing account. If you never had an IOE receipt, you leave that box blank.
Where each one shows up
The table shows where you find each number and whether it works in the public status tool.
| Item | IOE receipt number | Online Account Number |
|---|---|---|
| Found on | Receipt notice and case card | Account profile or Account Access Notice |
| One per | Filing | Person's account |
| Typed into Case Status Online? | Yes | No |
Which Forms Can Produce an IOE Receipt Number?
Any form USCIS accepts online can produce an IOE receipt number. The current fee schedule, Form G-1055, Edition 10/16/26, lists separate online prices for many common forms. If a form has an online price, you can file it in an account and receive an IOE code for it.

Family and green card forms online
These family and green card forms have an online price, so filing them in an account produces an IOE code.
| Form | Fee (paper / online) |
|---|---|
| I-130 | $675 (paper) / $625 (online) |
| I-485 | $1,440 (paper) / $1,390 (online); $950 / $900 if under 14 and filing with a parent |
| I-751 | $750 (paper) / $700 (online) |
Citizenship and card renewal forms online
These citizenship and green card renewal forms can also be filed online for a lower fee and an IOE code.
| Form | Fee (paper / online) |
|---|---|
| N-400 | $760 (paper) / $710 (online); reduced fee $380 (paper only) if household income is at or below 400% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines |
| I-90 | $465 (paper) / $415 (online) |
When paper is required
Some requests still need paper. For example, the N-400 reduced fee is paper only, and fee waiver requests generally go on paper. Those filings get a center prefix instead of IOE. Our uscis fees hub covers how each fee works.
Why Did the USCIS Immigrant Fee Give Me an IOE Number?
The 2021 USCIS guide ties the IOE prefix to the USCIS Immigrant Fee as well as online forms. That fee is paid online after an immigrant visa is issued, so the payment record can carry an IOE-style code. The fee is currently $235.
What that IOE code is for
The Immigrant Fee funds production of your green card after you enter the U.S. on an immigrant visa. Keep its code in case the card is slow to arrive.
Have it ready for any card inquiry.
Is the Immigrant Fee IOE Code a Case You Can Track?
Only as a fee or card step. New immigrants sometimes search the fee's IOE code expecting an application status, but the result may only reflect the payment or green card production. Do not read it as a pending application.
Separate IOE numbers for later filings
If you later file Form I-90 or I-751 online, those forms get their own, separate IOE numbers. Track each one apart from the fee code.
Label each code with its form name.
Can a Paper Filing End Up With an IOE Prefix?
Possibly, but USCIS has not confirmed it. Some third-party guides say paper filings scanned into USCIS's electronic system can receive IOE numbers. Our verified sources tie IOE only to online filing and the Immigrant Fee, so treat the paper claim as unofficial.
What the unofficial claim says
Law firm posts describe IOE as covering electronic filings and, "increasingly," paper filings processed electronically. Forum users report mailing a form and receiving an IOE notice.
We could not confirm this on uscis.gov.
How to tell what happened
If you mailed your form and got an IOE code, nothing is wrong. Track it exactly as you would any receipt.
Your notice's received date and case type matter more than the prefix.
Linking a mailed case to your account
If you want the case in your online account, use the access code on your Account Access Notice to link it. The case keeps its receipt number after linking.
Then updates appear in the account.
Can You Read a Filing Date From an IOE Number?
No reliable method exists. USCIS does not publish what the ten digits in an IOE number mean. Use the received date on your notice instead.
Any site claiming to decode an IOE number's digits is guessing, so do not plan deadlines or inquiries around that kind of reading.
The unofficial digit theory
For center prefixes, third-party guides claim the digits show a fiscal year, a workday and a sequence. Those same guides note that IOE numbers do not follow the pattern.
Use the received date printed on the notice instead of any digit-based guess.
Where the real date lives
Your received date is printed on the notice and in the account. USCIS uses it for processing calculations and, for petitions, the priority date often matches it. If an IOE number "looks" like a different year, ignore the digits and trust the printed date.
IOE Case Status for Form I-485
Form I-485 can now be filed online, so many green card applicants see an IOE case status for the first time. Each companion form, such as an I-765 or I-131, gets its own separate IOE code.
Save each one in a separate folder.
The online I-485 fee
The fee is $1,440 (paper) / $1,390 (online); $950 / $900 if under 14 and filing with a parent under Form G-1055, Edition 10/16/26.
Filing online uses the lower price. Fees change, so confirm the amount on the G-1055 schedule on the day you file.
The edition rule for online and paper I-485
As of October 2026: 09/18/26 (01/20/25 and 09/04/26 editions rejected on/after Sept. 18, 2026; no grace period). Our I-485 adjustment of status guide covers each stage after the receipt.
When you file online, the system supplies the current edition, so the edition rule mainly matters if you file on paper.
Tracking the full green card package
Expect separate codes for the I-485, I-765 and I-131. Track all of them, because the work permit and travel document are decided on their own. Biometrics may be scheduled together, but decisions can arrive on different days.
IOE Case Status for Form I-130 and Spouse Petitions
An online Form I-130 gets an IOE receipt number and an online receipt notice. The fee is $675 (paper) / $625 (online). The status then moves through review to approval, after which spouse and family cases abroad go on to the National Visa Center under new case numbers.
Priority date on an IOE I-130
The I-130 notice shows the received date and, often, the priority date. Keep both. When the petition is approved, the IOE code stays your USCIS reference.
NVC uses that same priority date.
Spouse cases inside the U.S.
When a U.S. citizen files I-130 together with the spouse's I-485, each gets its own IOE code. Our Form I-130 family petition guide explains approval and next steps for each relative category.
IOE Case Status for Work Permits (Form I-765)
Many Form I-765 categories can be filed online, producing an IOE work permit case. Timing depends on the category and the office that receives the case.
A separate IOE code is issued for each I-765, even when it is filed with an I-485, so track it on its own.
Edition rule for Form I-765
As of October 2026: 08/21/25 (the 09/15/26 edition is NOT accepted because of a Sept. 14, 2026 court order). Online filing picks the accepted version for you. Our work permit guide explains eligibility categories and evidence.
Does an IOE EAD Renewal Receipt Extend Your Work Permit?
In most categories, no. Ended: renewals filed on or after Oct. 30, 2025 no longer get the up-to-540-day automatic extension (exceptions: TPS by law/Federal Register notice; STEM OPT 180 days). If you file an EAD renewal online, the IOE receipt notice no longer extends your current card.
Checking the wording on your own receipt
Renewals filed before October 30, 2025 may still carry the older extension language. Read your own IOE receipt before relying on it at work.
Ask an attorney if the wording is unclear.
IOE Case Status for N-400 Citizenship Applications
An online N-400 gets an IOE number and moves through biometrics, a field office interview and, if approved, the oath. Because interviews happen at local field offices, an IOE N-400 often shows a transfer or interview update partway through.
Check the account for those updates.
The online N-400 fee
The fee is $760 (paper) / $710 (online); reduced fee $380 (paper only) if household income is at or below 400% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.
Filing online uses the lower price. The reduced fee option requires paper filing, so it does not produce an IOE code.
Filing early online
You can file the N-400 up to 90 days before you reach 5 years (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen) as a permanent resident. Our citizenship application guide covers each step to the oath.
IOE Receipts for I-90 and I-751 Cases
Online I-90 and I-751 filings get IOE numbers, and their receipt notices do extra work. Each can serve as temporary proof of status when shown with your card.
Keep the receipt notice with your card, and print a copy from your account in case the mailed one is lost.
I-90 renewal receipt
I-90 receipt notice + expired card = proof of status for 36 months from the card's expiration date. The I-90 fee is $465 (paper) / $415 (online). Our green card renewal guide explains when to file and what to upload.
I-751 conditions receipt
I-751 receipt notice extends conditional status and work authorization for 48 months. The I-751 fee is $750 (paper) / $700 (online). Our Form I-751 guide covers the filing window and joint evidence.
IOE Numbers on Employer Petitions (I-129 and I-140)
Employers can file some petitions online, so H-1B and immigrant worker cases may carry IOE numbers. The IOE number sits on the employer's notice, and the worker uses the same code for status checks and visa forms.
Ask HR for copies of each notice.
What the employer sees
The employer or its attorney files through its own account, so notices go there first. Our H-1B visa status guide explains the petition path.
Ask HR or the attorney for copies of every notice.
What the worker sees
The worker cannot see the employer's account. You track the petition with the IOE code on Case Status Online. For green card petitions, our Form I-140 guide explains the priority date shown on the notice.
What Do Common IOE Case Status Updates Mean?
IOE cases use the same update titles as paper cases. The tables below show what each common title means for an online filing and what to do next. Online filers also see account messages.
Check both views after each change.
Early-stage updates for IOE cases
These are the first updates most online filers see, with what each one means and the next step to take.
| Update | What it means for an IOE case | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Case Was Received | Online filing accepted; IOE code issued | Save the notice from your account |
| Fingerprints Were Taken | Biometrics complete | Wait for review |
| Case Is Being Actively Reviewed | An officer is working on it | Watch for RFE or interview |
Later-stage updates for IOE cases
These updates come later in the case, when the file moves offices or reaches a decision.
| Update | What it means for an IOE case | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Case Was Transferred | New office has the file | Use that office for times |
| Case Was Approved | Decision made | Watch for card or approval notice |
Updates only the account shows
Your account may show document uploads, messages and requests that the public tool does not. Read our full list of uscis case status meanings for every update title.
Check messages weekly.
How Does myProgress Work for IOE Cases?
myProgress is an account feature that estimates where your case is in the process. myProgress: personalized estimates in your USCIS online account (I-130, I-485, I-765, I-131, I-821, N-400, I-90). Because it works for filings made online, IOE cases are the ones most likely to show it.
What myProgress shows
The tab shows stages such as receipt, biometrics and decision, with estimated windows. USCIS says the estimates are not guaranteed.
Treat each window as a rough guide, and rely on your notices and the official processing times tool for any action.
Why the estimates can change
The windows reflect how similar cases have moved, so they can shift as office workloads change. Check the official processing times tool as well.
Do not plan deadlines around them.
Does an IOE Case Get Transferred Like Paper Cases?
Yes. IOE cases can be moved between offices, just as paper cases are. A transfer sends the file to a new office for workload or interview reasons. The IOE number stays exactly the same, and the new office sends any later notices.
What changes after a transfer
The office handling the case changes, so the processing time you should check changes too. You may get a transfer notice in your account and by mail.
Your receipt number does not change.
Checking the new office's processing time
After a transfer, select the new office in the processing times tool; the old office's figure no longer applies to your case.
Use the office named on the transfer notice to get the correct figure.
Are IOE Cases Processed Faster?
USCIS has not published data showing IOE cases are decided faster than paper cases. What online filing does speed up is intake: the receipt appears in your account without waiting for mail. The decision itself follows the office's queue.
What online filing does change
- The receipt is issued without mail delays.
- Notices post to your account.
- Online prices are lower for many forms.
- Evidence uploads avoid lost-mail risk.
None of these changes the officer's review queue.
What it does not change
Officer review time depends on the form and office workload. A case can wait just as long after an IOE receipt as after a paper one.
Plan around the office's posted processing time.
How Do You Find Processing Times for an IOE Case?
To find processing times for an IOE case, choose your form in the official processing times tool and select the office named on your newest notice. If no office is shown, contact USCIS to confirm it.
Do not search for an IOE office; no such office exists in the tool.
Using the official tool
Go to egov.uscis.gov/processing-times. Pick the form, then the category and the office. Our uscis processing times guide explains how to read the result.
Note the date you checked, since figures change.
When the office is unknown
Some forms are processed across several centers and the tool lists them together. If your form is listed that way, the office matters less. If it asks for one specific office, wait for a notice or ask the Contact Center.
Why Does My IOE Number Say "Not Found"?
An IOE number usually fails because of a typo, a zero typed in place of the letter O, an extra space, or a case that was saved as a draft and never submitted. Brand new cases can also take a short time to reach the public tool.

Typing and timing errors
The table lists two common lookup failures caused by typing or timing, with a fix for each.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Error right away | "I0E" typed with a zero | Use the letter O |
| Not found, new case | Not yet in the public tool | Check the account, retry later |
Drafts and account-only results
These two problems come from unsubmitted drafts or the public tool lagging behind your account.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No code at all | Draft never submitted | Finish and pay in the account |
| Works in account only | Public tool lag | Rely on the account view |
Why Does My Online Account Show Updates the Public Tool Does Not?
For online cases, the account often updates first, and it also holds messages and uploads the public tool never shows. If the account shows a recent action and Case Status Online does not, wait; the public result usually catches up.
When neither view changes
If neither the account nor the public tool has changed for a long time, see our guide to a uscis case status not updating.
A long quiet period is common during review, so compare your wait with the posted time first.
Why Is My IOE Case Missing From My Online Account?
An IOE case usually appears automatically in the account that filed it. If it is missing, you may be signed in with a different email, the case may have been filed by an attorney's account, or it may belong to another family member's login.
Common causes
- You created a second account with another email.
- A relative filed the petition from their login.
Either one leaves the case under a login you are not using now, so the account you opened looks empty.
Cases filed by a representative or employer
- A lawyer or representative filed from their own account.
- The employer filed the petition.
In both cases, the filer's account holds the notices. Ask them for copies, and track the case on Case Status Online with the IOE number.
How to fix it
Sign in with each email you may have used. Ask your representative how they filed. For paper-linked cases, use the online access code from your Account Access Notice.
Never open a second account to fix it; duplicates make linking harder.
How Do You Recover a Lost IOE Receipt Number?
A lost IOE receipt number is usually easy to recover, because the notice lives in your online account. Sign in, open the case card and download the receipt notice again.
If someone else filed for you, ask them to send a copy of the notice.
Inside your account
Open the documents section for the case. Each notice shows the IOE number at the top.
Download the PDF and save a copy offline, so you can find the number again without signing in.
If you lost account access
Use the account recovery steps on the sign-in page. If recovery fails, call 800-375-5283 with your A-Number and personal details. Never buy a "lookup" from a third-party site.
USCIS never charges for this.
One Online Package, Several IOE Numbers
A single online package produces one IOE number per form. A family-based green card filing can create codes for the I-130, I-485, I-765 and I-131. Each code has its own status, notices and decision date, so track every one separately.
Why separate codes matter
Approval of one form does not update another. The work permit may be approved while the I-485 waits.
Each needs its own check, and a decision on one form does not tell you where the others stand.
A simple tracking sheet
Copy this sheet and fill in one row for each form in your package as notices arrive.
| Form | IOE number | Received date | Latest update |
|---|---|---|---|
| I-130 | IOE… | (from notice) | (from account) |
| I-485 | IOE… | (from notice) | (from account) |
| I-765 | IOE… | (from notice) | (from account) |
| I-131 | IOE… | (from notice) | (from account) |
IOE Case Status Decision Table: If This, Do That
Most IOE case status questions have a simple next step. Match your situation to the guide below. If none fits, or the case is far past the posted time, contact USCIS or a qualified representative.
Save it for later, and recheck it after each new notice.

When to escalate
If your case is outside the posted processing time for its office, you can submit a case inquiry. Urgent needs may justify an expedite request. Repeated failures can go to the USCIS Ombudsman.
An IOE Case From Submission to Decision
An online case follows a predictable order, from an instant IOE receipt through biometrics and officer review to a decision. Each stage posts to your account. Wait times differ by form and office, so we show stages, not durations.
Stages may overlap, such as biometrics during review.

What you see at submission and receipt
- Submit: a confirmation screen and payment record.
- Receipt: the IOE notice in your documents.
Save both right away. The confirmation screen proves you submitted, and the receipt gives you the code you will use for every later check.
What you see after the receipt
- Biometrics: an appointment notice, if required.
- Review: a quiet period, maybe an RFE.
- Decision: an approval or denial notice.
Not every case gets biometrics or an RFE; some go straight to a decision.
Mistakes People Make With IOE Numbers
The biggest IOE mistakes come from treating the prefix as an office and from mixing up numbers. Both lead to wrong wait times or failed lookups.
Both are easy to avoid once you know the IOE prefix names a channel and each number has one job.
Errors with the number itself
- Typing "I0E" with a zero.
- Putting the receipt number in the OAN box.
- Decoding the digits for a filing date.
Each one is fixed by copying the code exactly from your notice.
Errors in tracking and wait times
- Searching "IOE service center" for a wait time.
- Tracking only the I-485 in a package.
Instead, use the office on your newest notice for wait times, and track every form in the package separately.
How Do You Spot a Fake IOE Notice?
A real IOE notice always appears in your online account. If a letter or email shows an IOE number that is not in your account, does not work in Case Status Online, or demands payment, treat it as a likely scam and check on uscis.gov.

Red flags
Requests for gift cards, wire transfers or your account password are never legitimate. Our guide to common uscis scam tactics lists more.
USCIS also never asks you to pay by phone.
How to verify
Compare the notice with your account documents. Search the number on Case Status Online. Our guide on how to check if a USCIS notice is real walks through each test.
How Do You Contact USCIS About an IOE Case?
For an IOE case, start in your online account, where you can read messages and notices. For questions the account cannot answer, call the Contact Center at 800-375-5283 (TTY: 800-767-1833). Live calls and chat: Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern.
What to have ready
Your IOE number, form type, received date, A-Number if you have one, and the date of the last update. Agents can confirm the assigned office, explain an update or open a service request.
Other options
Emma, USCIS's online virtual assistant (English and Spanish), on uscis.gov can answer general questions. Our guide to reaching USCIS by phone or online explains every channel and when to use each.
When Should You Get Legal Help With an IOE Case?
Get legal help if your IOE case receives a request for evidence you do not understand, a notice of intent to deny, a denial, or an interview with complex issues. An immigration attorney or a DOJ-accredited representative can review the case.
Signs you need a professional
- A request for evidence with unclear demands.
- Past immigration violations or arrests.
- A denial or intent-to-deny notice.
- Questions about travel while the case is pending.
Do not wait until the deadline.
IOE vs Other Receipt Prefixes
IOE differs from other prefixes in one key way: it names a channel, while EAC, WAC, LIN, SRC, NBC, MSC and YSC name the office that first received a case. All prefixes share the same 13-character format, and none of them changes after a transfer.
Channel and form-based prefixes
These prefixes describe how a case was filed, or which form, rather than a physical office.
| Prefix | Type | Points to |
|---|---|---|
| IOE | Channel | Electronic (online) filing / Immigrant Fee |
| MCT | Form-based | Form I-539 filings |
Center prefixes by office
These prefixes name the service center or office that first received the case, which may not be the office deciding it today.
| Prefix | Type | Points to |
|---|---|---|
| EAC, WAC, LIN, SRC | Center | Vermont, California, Nebraska, Texas |
| NBC, MSC | Center | National Benefits Center |
| YSC | Center | Potomac Service Center |
What the difference means for you
With a center prefix, you at least know where the case started. With IOE, you start with no office and learn it from notices.
Either way, use your newest notice.
Where IOE Fits in the Receipt Number System
IOE is one of nine confirmed receipt prefixes, and the only one tied to electronic filing. The full format, the other prefixes and every related number are covered in our receipt number hub.
Start there if you hold notices with other prefixes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is IOE a service center?
No. IOE is a receipt prefix for electronic filing, not a physical USCIS office. The working office appears on later notices or in your account.
Why does my IOE case have no service center listed?
Many IOE receipt notices do not name an office, and Case Status Online rarely shows one. Watch for a later notice or transfer update. If you need the office for the processing times tool and your case is overdue, ask the USCIS Contact Center.
What does IOE mean in USCIS terms?
A 2021 USCIS guide lists IOE as "Electronic (online) filing / USCIS Immigrant Fee." It means the case or payment entered USCIS electronically.
Can I check IOE case status without an online account?
Yes. Case Status Online works for any valid receipt number, including IOE numbers, with no login. The account gives you more, including notices, history and messages, so sign in when you can.
Does an IOE receipt number mean my case is approved?
No. An IOE receipt number only confirms USCIS accepted an electronic filing or payment. The case still goes through review.
Can I link a paper-filed case to the account with my IOE case?
Yes. A USCIS online account can hold both online filings and paper-filed cases. Use the online access code from the Account Access Notice that came with your paper receipt.
